Humble ISD police officers test out VR training experience for real-life emergency calls
IMEROPEX conducted a technical demonstration event at the ION in Houston, Texas on January 16, 2025. This event was aimed at showcasing the capabilities of the IMEROPEX Persistent Environment for Experimentation and Rehearsal (PEER) platform, particularly in the context of countering the active shooter threat in Texas K-12 schools.
Event Details
- Preparation and Execution: Two days of setup were followed by the event itself on January 16, 2025. Setup involved integrating VR hardware with software, acclimating participants (Humble ISD police officers) to the equipment, integration with the immersive dome, and preparing livestream capabilities.
- Participants: Two Humble ISD police officers were the primary participants, using Full Dive Virtual Reality Units (FDVUs) to experience school safety VR scenarios.
- Demo Structure: Six demonstration sessions were scheduled, each featuring three different VR scenarios including a baseline, shot detection and facial recognition technologies. Each session (conducted in the OMNISPACE 360 Immersive Dome) included briefings, scenario execution, data analysis, and Q&A.
Key Features Demonstrated
VR Environment
An H-shaped school layout with multiple rooms was used to simulate real-world scenarios including a shooter situation with varying behaviors (hide, surrender, fight).
Hardware
Participants were equipped with VR hardware including Vive Focus Vision headsets, TESLASUIT Haptic Suits, Manus haptic gloves, and a Virtuix Omni One treadmill for immersive interaction.
Data Analysis Emulation
Although real-time data wasn’t automatically collected, manual data entry into a notional dashboard showed metrics like time in simulation, shots fired, and casualties.
